Saying Goodbye

After much consideration, I am going to have to step down from this blog. My short hiatus has become a long one and I have some more pressing matters to take care of at the moment.

Thank you for following my blog, I am sad to have to stop, but I cannot keep up with the multiple activities I have going on, clipping coupons and posting here.

Keep up the good work!

Always scan the card!!

So I went to Food Lion (Carrollton,GA) today to pick up their .99 kellogg's cereal. The cashier scans my items then my coupons. The total was a lot higher than I expected. (Twice as much)I asked if she was sure that was right. "Oh yes" After looking at my receipt. (Before I left the register) I realized that she hadn't scanned my MVP card. I explain that and she apologizes and gets the manager who tells her to cancel out every item (Thank God there were less than 10) and to re-ring them after scanning my card.
She does this, then realizes that I paid with a debit card and she needs to reimburse me with cash. Calls another manager over who gives me the difference from my COUPON AMOUNT. I'm like that's not right. So I take it over to the cs and explain that there was a miscommunication. The manager thought the cashier had forgotten my coupons.
So far a 10 minute trip is taking closer to 30 or more. Everyone is being really nice and apologizing and stuff-which makes me a LOT nicer about the whole ordeal. The manager then has to cancel every item (again) one at a time and re-ring them again.

So to avoid all the hassle PLEASE remember to have your card out ready to scan!!!

Thank you to the wonderful managers at Food Lion. They were very gracious and apologetic about the whole situation. Kudos to you.

My 'score' for the trip:

2-apple jacks cereal .99 ea-1.50/2 = .50

How Much Should You Spend?

Do you know how much you spend on groceries each week? Each month? Well the government has an idea as to how much the "average American family" spends. There is an online calculator to try out here. I calculated mine and it was almost $900 a month!! I have NEVER spent $900 a month to my knowledge. Try it out. How much do they think you should spend?

Heart Attacks

We are raising money for the American Heart Association. I say we. My two oldest are participating in the Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser. This is a charity dear to my own heart as I lost both of my grandfathers to heart attacks when I was younger and my mom and my her sister both have heart issues.

Here's the deal, each student from the school (who raised money) will jump rope for 45 minutes on February 26th. All proceeds raised from this event will benefit research, education, and community programs of the American Heart Association.

I'm placing links on my site in an effort to help boost their fundraising (as I don't work outside of my home). Plus we're having a good old fashioned boys vs girls contest. My daughter is 10 and my son is 7. If you can help out please do.

Woo Hoo, lucky

So I went to Walgreens today hoping that they still ahd their Reeses whips still on sale (my whips coupons came in). Unfortunately they were back at full price. So I strolled on over to their clearance table and spotted a bunch of glade flameless candles for $4 and candles for $1.75. I didn't have my coupons for those so I'll go back tomorrow for them. But I did find Boost Smoothies marked down from $7.99 to $3.99 AND there were $2 off coupons on the boxes. I'm a little low on cash til Friday, so I only picked up one box. But hey, $7.99 down to $1.99. That's a pretty good deal to me.

Recipe Swap

I've never done a recipe swap, but after seeing them over at The Grocery Cart Challenge and at Cooking Like a Frugalite I have decided to share.

I never know what deals on meat I will find at the store. A few weeks ago I found kielbasa marked down to $1.99. I can normally feed my family with one pound of this. So I picked it up. Well at the beginning of this week I was scraping for things to put together. After searching through some old recipes I came up with putting a few different recipes together from ingredients that I had on hand. (Which wasn't much, LOL)

Kielbasa Quickie
(feeds 4-6/ Estimated time of prep and cooking 30 minutes total!)

1lb kielbasa
2 boxes of Stove Top stuffing
2 cups of broth (I used beef broth but chicken works too)
2 cups cheddar cheese (or whatever you have)

-Preheat oven to 350 degrees/Spray 9x13 pan with cooking spray
-Dump Stove Top into pan
-Pour in broth
-Cut up kielbasa into bite size pieces and place on top of stuffing (do NOT mix)
-Sprinkle cheese on top
-Cover with loosely with foil
-Bake for 10 minutes
-Remove foil and bake for 10 more minutes

Great with side salad or whatever veggies you have on hand or even just by itself. This is very filling. My hubby can eat quite a bit, but he was full after just one bowl of this.

You're welcome to share this, just give me credit please.

The Beginning of It All

I always thought I did pretty well in the grocery department. I spent no more than $600 a month for my six, including diapers, paper towels, toilet paper, etc. Then I discovered this lady who only spent $800 for the entire year of 2008 on her family of four. Check it out here.

After reading some of her blog, I have been inspired, no, challenged, to do better myself. After all, who couldn't use a few thousand dollars a year more? So here is my blog to track my spending. The basic goal is around $60 a week. It may vary according to the sales every week, however the ultimate goal (which is how I came up with $60 a week) is to spend no more than $3200 for the year for my family of six. It should be interesting considering with my budget last year I spent $7200.
